when we were in 3rd year in dental college, its when we got to do our first patients(of course under guidance).
we would first watch our teachers and then get our own case.
one day, when posted in the oral surgery department(deals with teeth extractions), our batch mate got her first patient.
there we all were surrounding her while she gave the anesthesia and pulled out the badly decayed tooth.. the tooth was in such a bad condition that fragments were breaking off..
just then we realized that half the tooth was missing!!!
we searched all around the dental chair, but it was no where to be found...
she then realized it had gone inside the patient's mouth!! she had swallowed it!
what then, just gave her a banana to eat, so it would go right in and not make her choke or block the airway!!
......
in another first case in another department, prosthetic teeth were to be tried in a patient's mouth.. the teeth weren't fixed properly to the base. and after half an hour the student discovered a tooth to be missing..
she searched and searched..
the confused innocent patient looked at her, searched his mouth, took out the prosthetic tooth and said,"looking for this?"
......
so next time you sit in a dental chair, in a dental college, just make sure you're not the first patient!!
for, the first treated patient is the worst treated!!!
