"where are your two plaits?", said my first roommate, archana, as i just entered the room, excited, happy and singing to myself..
"they're gone ever since 5th grade"
"but you'll need to make them now",she said
"and please get oil for us and yourself when you go home this weeekend", monica added
'what's wrong with them', i thought to myself. maybe its their style.. they were both from rajasthan and i didn't know much about the place.. but why do they want me to adopt their different oiled, 2-plait style?
monica then explained to me how it was mandatory for the FRESHERS to wear two plaits, longer-than-knee suits with white salwars and the 50Rs rubber chappals! that's the system(as the seniors would call it)
after lots of introductions, dancing to chavanni(the right thumka) athani(thumka to the left!)- our dance would depend on what they would sing- chavanni athani or chavanni chavanni athani!!, singing songs(and i'd be made to sing in thai, which i hardly knew) and nursery rhymes, cat walks in those long suits, swimming in the air!! etc.. we had our FRESHER'S PARTY, our independence day!!
i loved it, not just the dance, the food or my being crowned 'miss evening' :) with my close friend, shraddha, but also how we'd gotten to know the seniors by then.
funny those days were! n funnier was the chavanni athanni chavanni chavanni athani chavanni..
try it ;)!!
